WINTERVILLEPitt Community College students and employees continued the schools Black History Month celebration this week with an entertaining Readers Theater event.

Held in the Goess Student Center Wednesday, "Follow the Star: A Literary Journey toward Inclusion in the American Dream of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" explored the evolving feelings black Americans experienced in their journey from slavery to citizenship.

The program drew a standing room-only crowd and featured recitations of works by noted African-Americans as well as a musical performance by PCCs gospel choir, Elements of Praise.

Readers Theater is one of several events PCC has scheduled this month in celebration of Black History Month. It was sponsored by the colleges Arts and Sciences Division, Student Government Association and Multicultural Activities Committee.

The colleges Black History Month celebration will continue Feb. 17-19 with "Banneker's Legacy Poster Display: Crediting Creativity & Contribution toward the Technological Advancement of Society."

Held in honor of Benjamin Banneker, a mathematician, astronomer, clockmaker and city planner, the display will feature African-Americans who have made significant contributions to math, science and technology in pursuit of freedom, citizenship and equality.

Black History Month was originally established as Negro History Week in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, an African-American author and scholar. The event developed into a month-long observance in 1976.

This years national Black History Month theme is "The Quest for Citizenship in the Americas."
