Greenville’s Alexander Moore Receives Outreach Scholarship

WINTERVILLEThe Pitt Community College Foundation announced this week that Alexander Moore has been named this years recipient of the Dr. Garrie Moore Endowed Outreach Scholarship.

A 2008 North Pitt High School graduate, Alexander Moore is the son of Zeb and Carolyn Moore of Greenville. He is currently in his second semester at PCC, where he is studying computer programming.

Im thankful, Moore said of his scholarship. I needed it to help pay for books.

Established in March 2006, the Dr. Garrie Moore Endowed Outreach Scholarship serves two purposes: to make financial assistance available to worthy Outreach students at PCC and to honor Moore for his contributions to the college as a member of the schools Division of Student Development Services.

Outreach students enrolled at Pitteither full- or part-timeare eligible for the scholarship so long as they display positive attitudes, show commitment to academic excellence and are North Carolina residents.

According to Dr. Donald Spell, Vice President of Student Development Services at PCC, a scholarship committee selects recipients for the scholarship on the basis of academic achievement, demonstration of a strong commitment to succeed, or financial need.

Students chosen for the Moore Scholarship must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average, demonstrate professional performance in all areas related to their respective fields of study, mentor incoming Moore Scholarship recipients, and promote the colleges Outreach program within Pitt County, Spell said.

According to Susan Nobles, executive director of the PCC Foundation, the Moore Scholarship was developed through contributions from Dr. Garrie Moores friends and family members. Two years ago, she said, Southern Bank helped endow the fund and has made $2,000 contributions annually to enhance the endowment.
