WINTERVILLE—Pitt Community College’s Criminal Justice Department presented the very first John Minges Criminal Justice Scholarship this month to student Deborah Kincannon.

A Maury resident, Kincannon has attended PCC since the summer of 2007. Despite working full-time as a correctional sergeant for the N.C. Department of Correction, she has competed 39 credit hours with a 3.69 grade point average.

“(Deborah) is a diligent student, very much deserving of such an honor,” said PCC Criminal Justice Instructor Altrice Gales.

According to Gales, applicants for the Minges Scholarship, which is worth $500, must be second-year students with a minimum 3.0 grade point average and at least 24 credit hours earned from PCC’s Criminal Justice program. Applicants, she said, must also submit a completed application accompanied by two letters of recommendation and a writing sample.
