WINTERVILLEPitt Community College Basketball got tough defensively and hit the boards to earn its first Region X Conference victory of the season, 93-75, over Louisburg College.

The Bulldogs (3-0 overall, 1-0 Region X) battled back-and-forth with the Hurricanes before taking a three-point lead into halftime at 44-41. The second half of Saturdays matchup was all-Pitt, highlighted by a pair of slams by Purnell Vick and Eugene Jenkins.

PCC guard Adonte McCarter led the Bulldogs by hitting a pair of 3s and finishing 8-of-16 from the floor for 23 points to go along with 11 assists. Stephen Gomola handled the inside work for the Dawgs, connecting on 7-of-8 shots and three free throws for 17 points.

Jenkins tallied 13 points, six boards, seven assists and, without a doubt, the games highlight. With 4:42 remaining, the 6-1 guard out of Southwest Edgecombe High School took off just inside the free-throw line and slammed the ball through with authority over a pair of Hurricanes defenders to give Pitt an 83-64 advantage and send the Coburn Center crowd into a frenzy.

(Im) very glad to get a win in the conference, PCC coach Chad Reynolds said after the game. I thought we played a very solid 40 minutes of defense. There was never a point where I felt we let up our intensity.

Reynolds said his teams 39-25 rebounding advantage was the games deciding factor. We worked hard on rebounding the last two practices, he said. I am glad it paid off for our team.

Five players finished in double figures scoring for PCC. In addition to McCarter, Gomola and Jenkins, Steffen McGhee had 10 points and nine assists and Damien Williams had 10 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Johnny Godette led the Pitt rebounding effort with nine.
