WINTERVILLEPitt Community College Student Ambassadors concluded their annual service project this month and presented a $1,570-check to representatives from Greenvilles Little Willie Center. Through three fundraisers this fall, the ambassadors surpassed their fundraising goal by more than $400. The students presented a check to Melissa Alston, volunteer coordinator with the Center, and Rodger Harris, vice president of the Centers Board of Directors. Started in 1990, the Little Willie Center provides tutoring and mentoring services to at-risk children ages 3 to 17. It is an all-volunteer organization with a mission to empower local youth, strengthen the community and help re-establish the family structure. To raise money for the Center, ambassadors held drawings for gift baskets during the PCC Foundations annual Golf Classic in October, the schools Fall Fest celebration, and during the Down East Holiday Show earlier this month. Leslie Rogers, PCC Assistant Vice President of Student Services and an advisor to the ambassadors group, said the annual service project is an excellent learning opportunity for the students. The community service component of the student ambassador program is designed to encourage and teach good citizenship, Rogers said. We are training these outstanding students to be both leaders and to find causes for which they feel passionate to improve their community. PCC Student Ambassadors are selected annually through an application and interview process conducted each spring. Those chosen receive scholarships from the PCC Foundation to attend Pitt. In return, ambassadors conduct campus tours, recruit, and assist with school-related events and activities. They must also perform weekly service hours and maintain a 3.0 grade point average or better. |
