WINTERVILLEAfter topping Wake Tech for a third time this season, Pitt Community Colleges 2008 campaign came to an abrupt end Saturday with a loss to Spartanburg Methodist College in the Region X Conference Volleyball Tournament.

PCC hosted this years conference tourney in the Charles Coburn Center and led off the single-elimination event with a three-set victory over the fifth-seeded Eagles, 25-15, 25-19 and 25-17. The win led to a showdown with top-seeded Spartanburg, which went 2-1 against the Bulldogs during the regular season.

Behind 14 kills from Region X Player of the Year Tiffany Dean, the Pioneers proved too tough for PCC once again, topping the Dawgs 25-19 in the first two sets before closing out the match with a 25-14 win in the third frame.

Spartanburg Methodist (24-7 overall) went on to win the Region X Tournament by defeating Cape Fear Community College, which knocked off Guilford Tech earlier in the day. The Pioneers, who also captured the Region X regular-season title, now advance to the NJCAAs national tourney in Council Bluffs, Iowa, for a second straight year.

Pitt, which finished the season with an 18-12 mark, placed freshman outside hitter Callie Haithcock on the All-Region X Conference team for her stellar play during the 2008 regular season.

Nine sophomores played their final game for PCC this weekend. Brittany Alford, Michelle Bracey, Stephanie Daughtry, Camille Holland, Augusta Johnson, Courtney Koch, Mallory Meadows, Lauren ONeal and Danielle Towler finished their Bulldog careers with a 39-25 record.

Four freshmen are set to return to Pitt next season. In addition to Haithcock, Karen Perkins, Jessica Sweers and Kristen Whitehurst will be sophomores in 2009.
