GREENVILLE—Pitt Community College welding students and instructors recently lent their time and welding skills to a project that will benefit the J.H. Rose High School soccer program for years to come.

According to Roy Lanier, department chair of PCC’s Welding Technology curriculum, three current students, a former student and two instructors spent 14 hours over two Saturdays in August constructing a revenue-generating sign at the Rose soccer field. The sign will feature advertisements that are expected to generate between $10,000 and $12,000 for the Rampants’ soccer program each year.

Pitt’s welding program will be featured on the sign as a show of appreciation for the hard work put in by the PCC contingent, Lanier said.

Joe Brittain, Pitt’s Electrical/Electronics department chair, helped organize the sign project along with Lanier, saying the two viewed the effort as a good recruiting opportunity for the welding program.

Lanier agreed, adding, “It was good exposure for the welding program and builds a good relationship with Rose High School and the public school system.”

Brittain, whose son is a sophomore soccer player at Rose, also thanked Signs Now for providing a bucket lift truck for the project at no charge.
