NORFOLK, VASent down from Baltimore to the Orioles organizations Triple-A affiliate in Norfolk, Freddie Bynum is batting .279 for the Tides and leads the team with a .388 on base percentage. Bynum, who starred for Pitt Community College in 1999 and 2000, has gone 24-for-86 from the plate with two doubles and three triples in 26 games for Norfolk. The speedy utility player has six stolen bases for the Tides and has scored 11 runs to go along with 11 runs batted in. After spending the entire 2007 season with Baltimore, Bynum began the 2008 campaign on the disabled list after injuring his right knee at the start of Spring Training. He eventually joined the Orioles in May and was named the teams starting shortstop. But the former PCC Bulldog never could find his groove at the plate. He batted .192 (19-for-99) in 34 games for Baltimore before the Orioles designated him for assignment on June 22. He joined the Tides five days later and batted .400 (6-for-15) with two runs batted in and two runs scored before being recalled by Baltimore on July 1. Bynums struggles at the plate continued after he rejoined the Orioles and his chances of remaining with the team were further diminished by shaky defensive play. The Orioles sent the 28-year-old Wilson native back to Norfolk on July 22. The Tides, who have 14 games remaining on the schedule, conclude the season at Richmond on Sept. 1. |
