GREENVILLEThe Pitt Community College Foundations Futures First Capital Campaign is closer to its fundraising goal due to a sizeable contribution from the Southern Bank Foundation.

On June 30, Southern Bank representatives presented the first installment of a $100,000-campaign pledge to PCC President G. Dennis Massey and Susan Nobles, the PCC Foundations executive director. The presentation took place at Southern Banks newest Greenville location on Stantonsburg Road.

"The Southern Bank Foundation makes charitable gifts to support a variety of programs in areas of North Carolina served by Southern Bank and Trust Company, said Wayne E. Murphy, a Southern Bank Senior Vice President and Regional Executive. Through this donation, the Southern Bank Foundation is pleased to help the (PCC) Foundation fulfill its mission of campus facility growth and expansion and wishes it continued success in its future endeavors.

At a cost of $6.5 million, PCC will soon add 34,000 square feet to the home of its allied health programs, the William Fulford Building, in order to meet a rising demand for health care training.

To pay for the new addition, which will be named in honor of ardent PCC supporter Herman Simon, the PCC Foundation launched an $8 million capital campaign in February. It is the first such endeavor in the colleges 47-year history.

Last month, PCC Foundation officials reported that Futures First had met 78 percent of its fundraising objective through various gifts and grants. Approximately $5.8 million was raised with contributions from private donors and public agencies before the campaign was publicly announced, the officials said.

Massey said for Futures First to reach its fundraising goal, partnerships with individuals and organizations in the community must play an essential role.

The generosity of Southern Bank is exemplary of these partnerships, he said. We are very grateful of the support which Southern Bank has given to our students and staff. I am excited and pleased that Southern Bank is a leader in investing in the future of Pitt County and our entire region."

James Earl Jones, Senior Vice President & City Executive for Southern Bank, said contributing to Pitts Futures First campaign is Southern Banks way of continuing to serve the people and communities of Eastern North Carolina, something the bank has done since 1901.

As an Eastern North Carolina bank, we feel this contribution will provide a direct and immediate impact on educational opportunities in the areas of allied health services, Jones said. It is simply an investment in the future health care professionals that will serve all of Eastern North Carolina by working with providers such as University Health Systems with hospitals throughout Eastern North Carolina."

PCC administrators plan to break ground at the site of the future Simon Building this fall. When construction is completed in January 2010, the two-story building will provide classrooms, labs and offices for health sciences curricula.

Along with construction, Futures First revenue will be used to purchase new technology to keep PCC programs up-to-date. Funds will also be used to create endowments for student scholarships and to fund training and professional development for college employees.
