WINTERVILLEThe North Carolina Automobile Dealers Association (NCADA) has made a $1,500-contribution to the Pitt Community College Foundation in support of PCCs Automotive Systems Technology program.

According to NCADA Chairman Bill Brown, the funds are part of a National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation program honoring five former CEOs of the National Automobile Dealers Association Board from North Carolina. As the NCADAs chairman, Brown had the freedom to distribute the funds however he saw fit.

Brown, the owner of Greenvilles Brown and Wood Pontiac/Cadillac/Buick/GMC and Brown and Wood Jeep/Mazda, said he chose Pitt as a way to support the local community and help an automotive student get an education.

Weve recruited a lot of automotive technicians out of Pitt Community College, Brown said, adding that there is a significant shortage of auto techs statewide.

As automobiles are fitted with an increasing number of electronic components, repairing them requires more and more education. Gone are the days of fiddling around in the backyard shop and moving directly into a career as an automotive service technician.

Its a highly-skilled job, Brown said. You take the latest Cadillac; it has five computers and 20-plus microprocessors. Everything is electronic these days.

For those who are interested in repairing automobiles, Brown said it can be a good way to make a living for those who will apply themselves.
