| WINTERVILLEPitt Community College student Christopher M. West gave a tremendous effort but came up short in his attempt to become vice president of Phi Theta Kappa International. During the organizations convention in Philadelphia last month, West was topped by Kerry Cutler of Trident Technical College (S.C.). Cutler will now serve as one of five officers representing the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 2 million members. West, who serves as president of PCCs Beta Nu Upsilon chapter of PTK, campaigned for two days at the convention with the help of fellow PCC student Debbie Crutchfield, who is also a PTK officer at Pitt. The election process culminated with West giving a three-minute speech before 4,000 community college students, staff and administrators on the consequences of forgetting the needs of those less fortunate in times of prosperity. Undeterred by the outcome of his vice presidential bid, West is already developing new ideas for PCCs PTK chapter, including development of an alumni chapter in Pitt County to reconnect those who have become disconnected with Beta Nu Upsilon. (Chriss) resolve is a testament to his character, said Edwin Franklin, a PCC Developmental English instructor and PTK advisor. And we at Pitt Community College congratulate Christopher M. West for his valiant efforts.
