WINTERVILLEThe nationally-ranked Pitt Community College volleyball team cruised past Lenoir Community College Wednesday to wrap up the Region X Conference regular-season championship and the top seed in next months conference tourney.
Ranked 20th in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association poll, the Bulldogs were sluggish at the start of their match with the Lancers but still won the first game, 30-22, before rolling in the next two, 30-17, 30-12.
The victory was PCCs nineteenth straight in Region X play, making the Dawgs 30-8 overall, 19-0 in the conference.
The best thing about winning the conference is it clinches the number one seed in the tournament, Pitt coach William Way said. Having the number one seed gives us the easiest possible road to win the Region X Tournament and go to Missouri for the national tourney. Weve helped ourselves out.
Casey Williams led the Pitt attack Wednesday, finishing with 12 kills to go along with four blocks. Sierra Ham pitched in with six kills and three blocks, and Jamie Morris posted a double-double with 26 assists and 10 digs.
PCC will close out the regular season Saturday at home against arch-rival Louisburg with only bragging rights on the line.
By winning (over Lenoir), Louisburg cant hurt us, statistically speaking, Way said. Theyre going to be number two in the conference and were going to be number one no matter what happens when we play. It will be all about pride on Saturday.
First serve on Saturday is at 7 p.m. in the Coburn Center.
