WALTERSBORO, S.C.Not even a 2-0 deficit at the start of the match could prevent Pitt Community College from topping USC-Salkehatchie Sunday as the Bulldogs completed a weekend road sweep and earned their eighth straight win.
PCC arrived for Sundays contest shortly after 11 a.m. and were informed they had forfeited the first two games. Coach William Way explained that Pitt had asked USC-Salkehatchie officials to move the matchs start time back to 12 p.m. from 11 a.m., but the message apparently resulted in a misunderstanding.
So, with their backs against the wall, the Dawgs came out swinging against the Indians and ultimately cruised to a 0-30, 0-30, 30-9, 30-26, 15-7 win.
Pitt turned in a stellar .460 hitting percentage to knock off Salkehatchie and committed just four errors. Five players combined to give the Dawgs 17 aces to go along with 29 kills.
Thats pretty dominant, Way said. Right now, were playing really well.
At 8-0, PCC is sitting atop the Region X Conference in sole possession of first place, but he doesn't want his squad to become complacent.
Its nice right now, but it really doesnt mean anything right now, Way said. It shows the hard work weve put in, but well enjoy it for an afternoon and move on.
The coach said making the NJCAA playoffs remains his teams goal. We want to be in Missouri in November, he said.
Way said he hoped his teams success would lead to additional support at home matches.
I hope students and faculty will take notice that were in first all by ourselves, he said. They should be proud of their team and come out and support them. I know when we go to Cape Fear and Louisburg, their fans are out there.
Up next for Pitt is Lenoir Community College, a team the Bulldogs beat with ease earlier this season, during the Third Annual Bulldog Volleyball Invitational. The Dawgs play LCC on the road Wednesday at 7 p.m. After that, its a showdown on the road at Louisburg on Sept. 30.
