2010 Black History Month Kickoff
Kemba Smith takes questions from the audience at the conclusion of her presentation at PCC.
WINTERVILLEPCC kicked off its Black History Month celebration Jan. 29 with a program in the Craig F. Goess Student Center that featured remarks from motivational speaker Kemba Smith.

Before a full house in the Goess Center's multipurpose room, Smith detailed a turbulent time in her life that began soon after she enrolled for classes at Hampton State University. Smith explained that she got in with the wrong crowd in an effort to 'fit in' with her new environment and trouble ensued.

She began dating a drug dealer and as a result of her connections with him, she was arrested, convicted and sentenced to 24.5 years in prison. After serving 6.5 years of that sentence, she was granted clemency in 2000 and released.

Now married with a 15-year-old son and another child on the way, Smith discussed the importance of making good choices at critical times in life. She detailed her life behind bars and the difficulties she faced in adjusting to family life after her release while emphasizing the enormous impact those choices can have.

PCC will host several BHM activities this month, including Friday Film Fest ("A Soldier's Story) on Feb. 5 and Reader's Theater ("No Sounding Brass, No Tinkling Cymbal") on Feb. 17. On Feb. 23, Attorney Earl Brown will inspire students with a presentation ("Pursuing Success in Difficult Economic Times") that will be followed by the Second Annual Black History Quiz Bowl.
