WINTERVILLE—Pitt Community College Student Ambassadors recently concluded their annual service project and presented an $1,800-check to a Carolina Pregnancy Center (CPC) representative this week.

Through several fundraisers this fall, ambassadors were able to surpass their fundraising goal by $600. On Monday, the students presented a check to CPC Executive Director Blake Honeycutt.

According to its website, CPC is a non-profit, non-denominational, non-political organization committed to providing compassion, information and support to those facing unintended pregnancies. Through two centers in Greenville and Washington, the organization has served more than 15,000 people over the past 24 years.

To raise money for CPC, ambassadors teamed with Brueggar’s Bagels on Oct. 21 and received a percentage of the business’s proceeds that day. They also generated money during Fall Fest and sold tickets for a gift basket drawing during the PCC Foundation’s Down East Holiday Show earlier this month.

Leslie Rogers, PCC’s Assistant Vice President of Student Services and an advisor to the ambassadors group, said the annual service project is an excellent learning opportunity for the students.

“The community service component of the student ambassador program is designed to encourage and teach good citizenship,” Rogers said. “We are training these outstanding students to be both leaders and to find causes for which they feel passionate to improve their community.”

PCC Student Ambassadors are selected annually through an application and interview process conducted each spring. Those chosen receive scholarships from the PCC Foundation to attend Pitt.

In return, ambassadors conduct campus tours, recruit, and assist with school-related events and activities. They must also perform weekly service hours and maintain a 3.0 grade point average or better.
