WILMINGTONPitt Community College Volleyballs late-season run took the team all the way to the Region X Tournaments championship game but ended just a few points short of a trip to Iowa for the NJCAA Tournament. Having won seven straight, including a first-round tournament victory over Wake Technical Community College, the Bulldogs found themselves trailing 2-0 in the title match against Spartanburg Methodist College. PCC evened the score by taking game three, 26-24, and game four, 25-23. But the Pioneers, who entered the tourney as the conferences lowest seed, proved too tough in the decisive fifth set, winning 15-13 to earn their third straight trip to the national tournament. Natalie Salter turned in a solid defensive effort for PCC with 27 digs against Spartanburg. Jessica Sweers finished with a team-high 23 assists, and Holly Sears paced the offense with 11 kills. Courtney Everette recorded seven kills for Pitt, and teammate Haley Galimore posted seven block assists. After finishing 5-3 in conference play during the regular season, PCC was seeded second for the Region X Tournament. Against third-seeded Wake Tech in the first round, the Bulldogs won 3-0 (25-18, 25-17 and 25-16), marking the fourth time they had beaten the Eagles this season. Eleni Bates led PCC offensively against Wake Tech with nine kills, and Sears added six more. Salter chipped in with 15 digs while Sweers tallied 15 assists. Pitt finished the 2009 campaign with a 21-14 overall record.
