Dawgs Win Two, Lose Two in Hagerstown Tourney

HAGERSTOWN, Md.�Pitt Community College Volleyball traveled to Maryland over the weekend and came away with a respectable 2-2 record in the Hagerstown Community College Invitational held Oct. 10-11.

After touring the nation�s capital on the trip to Hagerstown, including stops at the National Holocaust Museum and Washington Monument, middle hitter Kirsten Kelly helped the Bulldogs get off to a good start Saturday with a team-high 13 kills in a 3-1 victory over Harford Community College.

Natalie Salter added nine kills for Pitt and Morghan Stallings eight more as PCC took the first set, 25-22, and the second, 25-17, before dropping the third, 26-24.

Jessica Sweers tallied 16 assists for the Bulldogs, who closed out the Fighting Owls with a 25-13 win in the fourth set.

PCC struggled against the host team in Saturday�s second game and lost, 3-0. After dropping the first set, 25-15, the Bulldogs lost each of the next two by 25-20 counts.

With four kills, Kelly once again led Pitt offensively while Courtney Everette and Haley Galimore added three kills apiece. Holly Sears had nine digs for PCC, which dropped into the tourney�s second flight following Saturday�s loss to the Hawks.

Against Howard Community College Sunday, the Bulldogs rallied back from a 2-1 deficit to top the Dragons, 3-2.

Galimore had 10 kills and four block assists in the Pitt victory. Salter added nine kills and 10 digs as PCC took the first set from Howard, 25-14, before falling 26-24 in the second frame and 25-21 in the third.

The Dawgs won the fourth set, 25-23, before closing out the match with a 16-14 victory in the fifth frame.

Sweers recorded 19 assists and five service aces. Teammate Eleni Bates also had five aces to go along with 10 assists while Sears led the way defensively with 17 digs.

In the second flight championship against Genesee Community College on Sunday, Pitt easily won the first two sets before dropping the next three to the Cougars for a 3-2 loss.

The Bulldogs looked to be in good shape after topping Genesee 25-17 in each of the first two frames. But the Cougars turned the tide with a 25-18 win in set three and kept the momentum going with a 25-20 set four win and 15-10 victory in the fifth stanza.

Stallings had 13 kills for Pitt, which is now 13-10 on the season. Salter added eight kills for PCC, and Casey Raymer and Everette recorded seven kills each. Debbie Stotesbury had 19 digs for the Bulldogs, and Sweers led the team in assists with 22.
