Softball Team Takes Down a Pair of Four-Year Schools at Louisburg Tournament

LOUISBURGThe Pitt Community College softball team played the role of giant killer Saturday with victories over Elon and Chowan universities in a tournament hosted by Louisburg College.

PCC 1, Elon University 0

The Bulldogs, who are playing a series of exhibition games this fall in preparation for the 2010 season, broke open a scoreless game with the Phoenix in the sixth inning of Saturdays first contest en route to a 1-0 victory.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Tiffany Frey singled up the middle to start the Pitt attack. She took second on a passed ball and came home when Bri Richie doubled to right field.

Freshman pitcher Charity Watson made sure the one-run lead held up for the Bulldogs. The righty from Washington, N.C., struck out two in the seventh before getting a fly out to end the game.

Watson started and tossed a complete game, striking out 10 and walking one to earn the victory.

In addition to hits by Frey and Richie, Kristen Garner had a double for PCC.

Meredith College 8, PCC 4

Four errors proved to be the downfall for PCC in an 8-4 loss to Meredith College in Saturdays second game.

The Bulldogs scored first but allowed four runs by the Avenging Angels in the bottom of the frame to fall behind, 4-1.
Though PCC knotted the score at 4-4 with three runs in the top of the second, Meredith answered with three runs off Bulldogs starter Brianne McKenney for a 7-4 lead.

Sophomore Amy Godley came on for McKenney in the fourth and all but silenced the Avenging Angels bats in relief. The left-hander gave up just one run on two hits in three innings, but PCC could pull no closer.

McKenney took the loss for Pitt. The freshman worked three innings, allowing seven runs, six hits and a walk to go along with a strikeout.

Richie and Elizabeth Massey singled for the Bulldogs and Kimberly Boltinhouse added a double to pace PCC from the plate.

PCC 1, Chowan University 0

PCC responded well to disappointing loss to Meredith College by topping Chowan University, 1-0, in the teams final game of the Louisburg tourney.

Watson tossed her second complete game shutout of the day, and Richie hit her second game-winning double to power the Bulldogs past Chowan.

In seven innings from the circle, Watson struck out 13 batters, including five of the last six she faced. Richie, meanwhile, belted a double to right field to bring home Massey, who led off the sixth inning with a single to center.

Playing first base, Godley led Pitt from the plate with three hits. Richie finished 2-for-3 against Chowan, and Danielle Cassidy was 1-for-2.

Next up for PCC is a trip to Florence, S.C., Oct. 17-18 for a junior college showcase event. The Bulldogs will then play at East Carolina University Oct. 30.
