LA PLATA, Md.�After going 2-1 in pool play, Pitt Community College volleyball dropped a heartbreaker to Cape Fear Community College in the third-place game of the College of Southern Maryland Invitational. Having split the first four sets, the Bulldogs and Sea Devils moved to a deciding fifth frame Saturday and traded points until CFCC emerged with a 16-14 win to take the match. �(It was) a really fun, hard-fought match,� said PCC Coach Tom Marsh, whose team was powered offensively by Haley Galimore�s 16 kills and Jessica Sweers�s 34 assists. Holly Sears, who was named to the CSM Invitational All-Tournament Team, recorded 14 digs for Pitt against Cape Fear, which has now beaten the Bulldogs twice this season in non-conference action. PCC opened tournament play Friday with a 3-1 loss to West Virginia�s Potomac State College. Though the Dawgs won the first set, 25-22, they lost the next three, 26-24, 25-20 and 25-23. Galimore posted a team-high seven kills against the Catamounts, and Casey Ramer added five more. Eleni Bates led the way for Pitt in assists with 13, and teammate Natalie Salter finished with a team-high 18 digs. In Friday�s second game, Sweers had 11 assists as the Bulldogs blitzed Community College of Baltimore-Essex, 3-0. Courtney Everette, Kirsten Kelly, Morghan Stallings and Sears had four kills apiece for the Bulldogs, who won 25-17, 25-16 and 25-19. Pitt finished pool play in second place after a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17 and 25-22) win over Chesapeake College (Md.) Saturday. Sweers tallied 11 assists and eight services aces in the victory over the Skipjacks while Kelly and Stallings had five kills each. The Bulldogs are 6-5 overall following their 2-2 performance this weekend and return to action Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Jamestown against Region X Conference-foe Guilford Technical Community College. PCC will then play its first home match of the 2009 season Friday in a conference matchup with Cape Fear at 7 p.m. in the Charles Coburn Center. 09/14/2009
