WINTERVILLEThe Pitt Community College Alumni Association Speaker Series will return next month with the Greenville Utilities Commissions Andy Yakim discussing ways individuals can save money through energy and water conservation. Yakim, GUCs Energy Services Supervisor, is scheduled to speak in PCCs Craig F. Goess Student Center (Rooms 132-133) on Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. His presentation is the fifth installment of the speaker series, which the PCC Alumni Association started in February to provide the community with helpful information on a variety of topics. Through his role with GUC, Yakim oversees the commissions Energy Services Office and administers its E-300 Energy Efficient Home Program. He conducts energy audits, surveys and inspections, conducts research and compiles information on energy-related building sciences. At PCC next month, Yakim says he will provide attendees with practical knowledge they can use to lower their energy costs. Those in attendance will also learn how to calculate the cost of operating anything they own powered by electric current, gas or water, he said. Water costs and energy costs are rising, but that doesnt mean your individual utility bill has to rise along with it, Yakim said. There is much that can be done to dramatically reduce your utility bills . Its as simple as learning whats important and what is not. Yakim said he would cover crawlspace issues, the basics of science and physics to control energy and water costs, and, time-permitting, the myths and frauds of certain energy-saving products and advertisements. There is no charge to attend PCC Alumni Association Speaker Series events. For more information, call (252) 493-7287 or visit www.pittcc.edu/alumni.
