SANFORDWith strong setting from sophomore Jessica Sweers and solid overall play from several newcomers, Pitt Community College earned its first win of the season Tuesday by defeating Central Carolina Community College, 3-0. Sweers tallied 18 assists for the Bulldogs, who bounced back from a season-opening loss to Cape Fear on Sunday with their first Region X Conference victory of the 2009 campaign. Against the Cougars, PCC used long service runs by freshmen Natalie Salter and Holly Sears to take the first set with ease, 25-6. Set two was a different story, however. The Dawgs fell behind 20-15 before rallying back to win it, 25-23. A 25-13 win in the third frame closed out the match. Freshmen Eleni Bates and Haley Galimore made key contributions to the victory, which was Coach Tom Marshs first since re-taking the helm of the program he helped start nine years ago. Bates finished with seven kills and eight assists while Galimore posted five kills and two blocked shots. Next up for PCC (1-1, 1-0) is a trip to Spartanburg, S.C., this weekend for the Spartanburg Methodist College Pioneer Invitational. In addition to the host team, the Bulldogs are scheduled to face Brunswick Community College and North Lake College out of Irving, Texas, Sept. 4-5.
