Caroline Davenport | WINTERVILLE—The Pitt Community College Foundation announced this week that Caroline Davenport has been named the 2009 recipient of the J.S. Flake Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Davenport, a 2008 Farmville Central High School graduate, recently began her second year of PCC’s Medical Assisting program. She will receive more than $1,000 each semester from the Flake Scholarship to offset the cost of her college tuition and/or educational expenses. A Bell Arthur resident, the 19-year-old Davenport is the daughter of Bell Arthur’s James Ray and Debra Davenport. She is a VISIONS Career Development and Scholarship Program student at PCC. The Bell Arthur Water Corporation established the J.S. Flake Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund in February 2008 in memory of J.S. Flake, who served with the corporation for 37 years as a volunteer and member of its governing board. “We appreciate the support of the Bell Arthur Water Corporation, and we are pleased to partner with them to award this scholarship to their customers,” said Susan Nobles, executive director of the PCC Foundation. “Mr. Flake was an outstanding volunteer in the Bell Arthur community. This scholarship is a legacy to his leadership and volunteer spirit.” Nobles said the Flake scholarship would be awarded annually to a PCC student who is a customer of the Bell Arthur Water Corporation or who is a dependent of a customer. She said the PCC Foundation would accept applications for the 2010 scholarship between Feb. 1 and March 10 and added that an award recipient would be announced in May. Pitt students who are interested in applying for the Flake Scholarship should contact the PCC Foundation at (252) 493-7287 for additional details.
