Leona Ndabvonga, vice president of PCC's International Club, says her move to America from Zimbabwe has had its ups and downs but that she is getting accustomed to Greenville -- and the humidity.
| WINTERVILLE—With more than 90 countries represented by its current student population, Pitt Community College welcomed international students to campus Wednesday with a reception in the Craig F. Goess Student Center.
Sponsored by PCC’s International Club and Student Government Association, the program featured remarks from several college administrators, including Dr. Donald Spell, Pitt’s vice president of student development services.
Spell said the increasing presence of international students at PCC has created a diverse mixture of cultures on campus and “has opened the door to a global society.” He added that the college’s international population has broadened the campus community’s understanding of the world.
PCC President G. Dennis Massey said Pitt has begun incorporating international elements into curricula in order for students to gain a “global point of view.” He noted the college’s mission statement includes “educating and empowering students for success in a global economy.”
Representatives from PCC’s International Club also spoke during the reception, including Ghana’s Lukeman Ibrahim, Canada’s Ian Peters and Zimbabwe’s Leona Ndabvonga.
Wearing attire from her home country, Ndabvonga, who is the International Club’s vice president, said she is getting accustomed to American culture and adapting to Eastern North Carolina’s humidity.
Peters also discussed the weather, only he was referring to the frigid conditions of his native Winnipeg for much of the year. The International Club president gave a presentation on winter in his home country, where the average low in Manitoba is minus 31 C and snow is on the ground until at least early May.
Following Wednesday’s program, reception participants and attendees sampled food catered by Greenville’s GK Café and Catering.
