Ashley Nicole Joyner | WINTERVILLE—Pitt Community College nursing student Ashley Joyner has been selected to receive a scholarship from the Great 100 Nurses of North Carolina organization. The 22-year-old Joyner, daughter of the late Belinda Joyner, was one of 21 nursing students from all levels of higher education in North Carolina to be selected for the scholarship this year. The Goldsboro resident and her fellow recipients will be honored during the Great 100 Gala on Oct. 3 in the Greensboro Coliseum. “(Ashley) is an exceptional student and very worthy of this honor,” said PCC Director of Nursing Elizabeth Toderick. According to its website, the Great 100 Nurses of North Carolina is a grassroots organization started in 1988 to “positively impact the image of nursing” by recognizing nursing excellence and providing scholarships for nursing education in The Tar Heel State. The group has awarded $140,000 in scholarships over the past 12 years. In addition to scholarships, the organization recognizes 100 North Carolinians each year for nursing excellence. The goal is to identify deserving nurses who are making a difference in their communities and professional settings through their commitment to the nursing field. 07/13/2009
