| WINTERVILLE—Having raised more money than was needed to establish a memorial in their hometown, the Farmville Area Veterans Memorial Committee has used funding surplus to establish an endowed scholarship at Pitt Community College. Earlier this month, Hal Gordon, a Vietnam War veteran and member of Farmville’s American Legion Post 151, presented a $45,000-check to the PCC Foundation on the committee’s behalf. Last November, during PCC’s Annual Veterans Salute, Gordon announced the committee would be creating a scholarship for veterans who wanted to attend Pitt. “We just want to make sure that the vets coming out of the (current) conflicts and in the future can get an education,” Gordon said, adding that Farmville dedicated its veterans memorial on Nov. 1, 2008. Susan Nobles, executive director of the PCC Foundation, thanked the Farmville Area Veterans Memorial Committee for the donation and said the scholarship established by the group would help veterans pay for tuition and other education-related expenses. “The men and women in our armed services make sacrifices each day to defend our country and ensure our freedom,” Nobles said. “The scholarship established by the Farmville Area Veterans Committee will go a long way toward making sure these individuals can receive a quality education at PCC, and, for that, the PCC Foundation is extremely thankful.”
