WILMINGTONThe Pitt Community College volleyball program picked right up where it left off last year, defeating another Region X Conference team during the regular season. On Sept. 5, it was Cape Fear that fell to the Bulldogs in three games (30-24, 32-30, 30-27), giving PCC its first victory of the 2007 campaign after six losses in the Salt Lake Community College Invitational to start the season. Led by Jessica Joyners 10 kills (including the match winner) and Camille Hollands 28 assists, Pitt won its 22nd straight Region X regular-season match and moved to 1-6 overall, 1-0 in Region X action. Kristi Pipkin led the Dawgs in digs with 16. We worked well, passing and receiving serve, PCC coach William Way said of his teams effort against the Sea Devils. We also played with a higher intensity than Cape Fear, which is a result of having played against a number of nationally-ranked teams in Utah. Way said the Bulldogs must still work on their offensive execution and service game. He pointed out that PCC committed 13 service errors as a team against Cape Fear. There are no points for winning pretty or ugly, Way said. It was just a win, and it was really important for us to get off to the right start in conference play as we look to defend our conference regular season title. PCC controlled game one pretty much from start to finish against Cape Fear though a late run by the Sea Devils made the final score much closer. The Bulldogs actually trailed 27-24 in game two before freshman Augusta Johnson keyed a four-point run. Joyner put away the kill to give PCC the 32-30 game two win. Game three was a back-and-forth affair. Neither team stretched out a lead until Danielle Jarman and Stephanie Daughtry led the Bulldogs on a late seven-point run. 09/11/2007
