SALT LAKE CITY--Pitt Community College Volleyball Coach William Way had no doubt the Salt Lake Community College Invitational would be a challenge for he and his Bulldogs. On Friday, the coach and his young squad, which features three sophomores and 11 freshmen, found out just how tough the competition can be on a volleyball court when your opponents are national powerhouses. Pitt went 0-for-4 today against some of the country's best junior college volleyball talent. In fact, this weekend's 12-team field includes six schools ranked in the nation's top 25. The Bulldogs--playing their first game of the season Friday due to the cancellation of this year's PCC Bulldog Invitational--squared off with the home team, SLCC, and lost in two games (30-13, 30-11). Pitt essentially traded scores with the fourth-ranked Bruins in the early going before an extremely athletic SLCC club turned its service game up a notch and seized control. Tela Burnett led the Bruins with eight of her team's 32 kills. Courtney Koch, meanwhile, led PCC with two kills. Match two looked promising for Pitt. After dropping the first game, 30-12, the Dawgs backed 14th-ranked Hutchinson Community College (KS) into a corner in game two before the wheels fell off. The Dragons battled back from 18-13 down to ultimately take the second game, 30-22, and the match. In the third match of the day for Pitt, College of Eastern Utah broke open a close contest with a seven-point run in game one and went on to a 30-24 victory. The Golden Eagles carried that momentum into game two for a 30-18 win that closed out the match. Illinois Central topped PCC (30-13, 30-19) in Friday's fourth contest, leaving the Roughriders of Yavapai College (AZ) for the Bulldogs to play Saturday morning before they move on to the tourney's single-elimination consolation bracket at noon. 08/31/2007
